MEET KEN MAHAN

Meteorologist. Storyteller. Boston’s Weather Watcher.

I break down what’s happening in our skies and share the stories behind the forecast — so you know what to expect and why it matters.

My love for weather started early.

Hi, I'm Ken Mahan — meteorologist, storm chaser, weather storyteller, and lifelong weather enthusiast.

My fascination with weather began when I was just four years old. While watching cartoons one afternoon, I flipped through the television channels and suddenly heard a loud emergency alert: beep...beep...beep...beep. A radar map filled the screen, and although I couldn't read the warning, I knew something important was happening. My dad explained that thunderstorms were on the way.

Instead of being scared, I was captivated.

I ran outside to look at the sky, eager to see what was coming. In many ways, cartoons ended that day and my weather journey began.

Growing up in Worcester, Massachusetts, I was fortunate to experience New England's incredible range of weather firsthand — from blizzards and nor'easters to hurricanes, severe thunderstorms, and summer heat waves.

Friends and family quickly nicknamed me "the weatherman" because I was always tracking forecasts and explaining what was happening in the sky.

Today, more than two decades later, I'm proud to serve as the Lead Meteorologist for The Boston Globe, where I've spent the past two years covering everything from daily forecasts and breaking weather events to climate trends, hurricanes, winter storms, and the science behind our changing atmosphere. My goal is simple: provide accurate forecasts while making weather understandable, engaging, and even a little fun.

My path to the Globe has taken me across the country.

I studied atmospheric science and meteorology at Assumption University and Mississippi State University, chased storms across the Plains, forecasted weather in Alaska, covered severe weather and tornado outbreaks in Wisconsin, and worked in broadcast television throughout New England. Most recently before joining the Globe, I worked with NBC News and the Today Show, helping forecast and communicate major weather events nationwide alongside some of the industry's most respected meteorologists.

Along the way, I've witnessed hurricanes, tornadoes, wildfires, extreme flooding, powerful winter storms, and even a magnitude 7.1 earthquake while living in Alaska. Every experience reinforced the same lesson: weather impacts every aspect of our lives, and clear communication can help people stay informed, prepared, and safe.
